Easter Egg Assemblage Project

Collage on Your Eggs

Apr 9, 2009 Jenn Greenleaf

This project works with eggs that have had the yolks blown out of them, plastic Easter eggs, and wooden eggs.

There’s so much that can be done with something as simple as one little egg. This doesn’t have to be a traditional hard-boiled egg. For this project, consider using:

  • Eggs that have the yolks blown out of them. Kits are available in craft stores, as well as discount super centers, making the process so much easier than year’s past. Once the yolk has been blown out of the egg, refrigerate it immediately for future cooking use.
  • Plastic Easter eggs that are typically used to store candy when placed into an Easter basket. Consider using hot glue to hold the seam of the plastic Easter egg together before beginning the project.
  • Wooden eggs. These eggs are typically found in craft stores, and are also available in a wide variety of sizes. Consider picking up multiple sizes to add some variations to this project.

Materials:

  • Heavy-duty craft glue
  • Easter themed ephemera: paper scrapbook supplies, stickers, old greeting cards, clip art, magazine clippings, etc.
  • Acrylic paint: choose something that has a glitter or iridescent finish (or dust your own glitter on as the paint dries)
  • Paint or sponge brushes
  • Small containers of water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the surface of the egg: if you are using an egg that has had the yolk removed, consider lightly sanding the surface to give it a smooth finish. If you are using a plastic egg, glue the seam. If you are using wooden egg, check for imperfections and sand where needed.
  2. Start the collage work: start a single layer, but mix it up as much as possible. Remember, this is a small surface, so options are going to be limited. If the look of the egg’s surface in some areas is desired, then use small materials in the collage process.
  3. Add some color: dot, dab, and brush on some of the acrylic paint. This can be done in a random fashion, or an intricate design can be created.

Variations:

  • Add a small photograph to one or two sides of the egg, and trim it out with glitter glue, ribbon, or strings of beads.
  • Add a loop of ribbon, and embellish it with a floral bud using a glue gun.
  • Add a loop of ribbon, and then hang strings of beads down the sides of the egg.
  • Paint the egg first, dust it with glitter, and then add only a few Easter themed scrapbook embellishments to the egg’s surface.
  • Fill a basket with these eggs, and use it as a gift for a Senior Center or another place where people are typically not visited that often on the holidays.

These Easter eggs can be created using ephemera and other supplies that have nothing to do with Easter so they can be displayed year round. These eggs also make a great addition to wreaths, plant arrangements, and other decorative elements. The options are limitless.
