These projects are suitable for children and can be completed in art journals or on flat surfaces (canvas, drawing paper, and so on). Let's embrace this colorful season!

It's no wonder artists love embracing autumn. There's so much movement occurring in nature! From the changing of the leaves to the hardening of the textures of plant life; there's so much happening visually that it's hard not to be continuously inspired. We're going to talk about how to celebrate fall through art projects that can be completed alone or as an after-school project.

Autumn Assemblage

This is a range of mixed-media art projects meant to embrace everything about fall. Some themes and ideas to consider when setting up for these projects:

    1. Choose a theme.
    2. Decide if this is going to be a solo or group project.
    3. Decide if this project is occurring in an outdoor location or indoors.
    4. If this is a group project, plan on snacks and other necessities to have during breaks.
    Gathering supplies: When gathering supplies, try to apply the "use what you've got mentality." Not only will this help in terms of budget, but it will also lead to lessons in recycling, organizing and clutter reduction. Think outside the box when collecting these mixed media elements to add creative twists and turns to each project. (Please see Explore Artistic Boundaries for more interesting medium ideas.)Autumn Assemblage Collection: As part of the process of gathering supplies, it'll be necessary to go on an outdoor adventure. Be sure to bring a camera with you to capture the colors in the trees surrounding the area of exploration, as well as capturing other natural elements. Bring along a sketchbook and a charcoal pencil (or soft graphite will also work) to capture rock, bark, plant and leaf rubbings. During this adventure, collect pinecones, acorns, branches, flowers, leaves that haven't dried completely and small stones.Putting it all together: This is where the fun begins. Keep watercolor or acrylic paint in fall colors on hand when creating these pieces. Assemble rubbings, found objects and photographs into an assemblage piece, a collage, a painting or whatever other project seems most desirable at the time of creation.Other Projects to Consider
